Following the decline of white-tailed deer populations in the 19th century, restoration efforts involving restocking and protective legislation has resulted in one of history’s greatest conservation success stories. Today the white-tailed deer is perhaps the most abundant and accessible game species in the southeastern USA. The focus has now shifted from restoration to population management, and effective management of game species relies on accurate assessments of abundance and distributions. This camera trap photo was taken during a baited camera survey, one of the most commonly used techniques for surveying white-tailed deer populations.
